After graduating from Plant City Senior High School, I left for Samford University in Birmingham, where I met my husband Sonny Smart. We married in 1972 and moved to Slapout, Alabama, where he coached and I taught high school English. Our three amazing children were born in Montgomery . From central Alabama we moved to Bainbridge, Georgia in 1982. Sonny continued coaching football while I kept marking English compositions. Thirteen years and the two sons’ graduations later, Sonny, our daughter, and I moved to Rabun County. After 34 years of attempting to stomp out ignorance and to create a love for the power of language, I retired from fulltime teaching in 2005. Sonny and I then spent five years near Marianna, Florida. I did adjunct English teaching at Chipola College and the Florida Baptist College. When our grandbabies came in pairs, we put the Florida house up for sale and moved back to Mountain City. I have been teaching Monday nights at Mountain Ed Charter High School since 2014. After watching 500+ football games from the bleachers, 48 years of marriage to C. J. Smart, thousands of hours in public high school, I enjoy helping with our eight talented grandchildren, which include two sets of boy-girl twins age 13, traveling to interesting places, and supporting the UGA Bulldogs.
